Chocolates are a source of pleasure to most people. However, not all chocolates are healthy. It is organic dark chocolate that provides the most health benefits and it can be included in any healthy diet. Many people do not try these chocolates because they are afraid of a bitter taste. The trees grow well in equatorial conditions where there is a humid tropical climate with regular rainfall and a short dry season. Many manufacturers are committed to selling only fair trade products. Fair trade means that producers in developing countries have fair trading conditions and the workers who grow, pick and clean the beans are paid a fair wage.

Research has revealed that cocoa has a very high level of antioxidants. These are usually found in fruit and vegetables as well as in beverages like tea, coffee and wines. They help to decrease blood pressure and encourage heart health. They prevent tissue and cell damage by absorbing free radicals.

Cocoa beans contain many minerals, particularly magnesium, that helps support the brain, heart and the digestive system. It also contains iron and zinc that both play a critical role in keeping the body healthy. Enough iron means healthy blood and zinc plays a critical role in the immune system, liver, pancreas and skin.

Cocoa contains tryptophan and this essential amino acid is needed by the brain so that it can produce serotonin. Serotonin is a feel good neurotransmitter that gives a happy feeling. Other neurotransmitters like dopamine are also found in cocoa. This is why many people turn to chocolates when they are feeling low for that feeling of well being it gives.

Although the health benefits of dark chocolates are unquestionable, people often think that they have a bitter taste. They are often pleasantly surprised. The taste is much more intense than that of a more processed product and many people prefer this. Other ingredients like fruit or vanilla may be added to soften any bitterness.

These products may be found at health stores. Of course a wide variety are available from online stores and this means that you can easily compare brands and prices before making your selection to ensure that you are choosing the healthiest product at the right price. If you are addicted to your daily dose of chocolate, why not rather make it organic dark chocolate. This way you can indulge in a piece or two without any guilt whatsoever.
